Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Sword Lake, is a natural freshwater lake located in the city center. The lake has an area of 12 hectares, this is a lake that appeared in the 15th century, associated with the legend of King Le Loi returning the magic sword to the Turtle God. According to legend, once King Le Thai To was playing on a boat, suddenly a golden turtle surfaced to the surface demanding the king return the sword that Long Vuong lent him to repel the invading China army. After the king paid, the turtle dived into the water and disappeared.
